World Ozone Day

International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer

  • Ozone is something that we most definitely have to regulate. It’s a very important thing to regulate. -Scott Pruitt
  • The ozone is breaking down more and more each year; that’s a fact. That being said, we have to be more conscious of the sun and what it can do to your skin. -Bill Cowher
  • The thinning of the ozone layer is blamed on logging of tropical forests. The fact that the burning of fossil fuels and release of CFCs (chloro-fluoro-carbons) into the atmosphere occur largely in the rich countries are significantly ignored. -Mahathir Mohamad

When I was a kid, we never heard of smog, ozone depletion, acid rain, green house gasses. -Dennis Weaver

  • We have rocked the ozone radically, man. They could probably fix the ozone if everybody stopped what they were doing and they put some cement up there. -Mike D
  • I am afraid to go out in the sun now because of the holes in our ozone, I am afraid to breathe the air because I don’t know what chemicals are in it. -Severn Cullis-Suzuki
  • We’re gonna do a Bowling for Dollars-type thing, but it’ll be Breakdancing on Cardboard for Yen for the ozone layer, so it’ll be called Breaking in Space. -Adam Yauch
  • It’s absolutely stupid that we live without an ozone layer. We have men, we’ve got rockets, we’ve got saran wrap – fix it! -Lewis Black

Beginning in 1986, a series of field experiments were designed to test the various hypotheses which had been put forth to explain the Antarctic ozone hole. -Mario J. Molina

  • In contrast to the troposphere, the stratosphere is extremely dry and practically cloudless – the concentration of water vapor is measured in parts per million and is, in fact, comparable to that of ozone. -Mario J. Molina
  • Climate change and ozone depletion are two global issues that are different but have many connections. In the ozone depletion case, we managed to work with decision makers effectively so that an international agreement called the Montreal Protocol was achieved that essentially solved the ozone depletion problem. -Mario J. Molina
  • I use a lot of sunblock, which is something I learned from my mother at a young age – to stay out of the sun and be careful of skin cancer. We live in a time where global warming is at its maximum level. The ozone is destroyed, and our skin is exposed to sunbeams on a daily basis. -Eiza Gonzalez

Laboratory experiments, field observations and atmospheric modeling calculations have now established that chemical reactions occurring on PSC particles play a central role in polar ozone depletion. -Mario J. Molina

  • When I was mayor of Tulsa, Tulsa County was in nonattainment of the 1979 ozone NAAQS, so I have seen firsthand the economic impacts associated with the challenges of attainment and the legacy of EPA intervention that continues long after meeting the standard. -Jim Inhofe
  • Not a whole lot of us are wrestling somebody for a canned food item in the supermarket or having an ax fight in the jungle clearing. Instead, we sit and think about taxes and the ozone layer. -Robert Sapolsky

We’re looking at Earth science, observing our planet. Also space science, looking at the ozone in the atmosphere around our Earth. Also looking at life science. And on a human level, using ourselves as test subjects. -Laurel Clark

  • The park lies directly downwind from a slew of coal plants. Virtually all of the major contaminants in the local air and water are direct results of coal emissions. Coal produces ozone, which kills trees. Coal produces sulfates, which kill fish. No other park in the country has more ozone or sulfates than Shenandoah National Park. -Wil S. Hylton
  • Despite Arizona’s remarkable growth in recent years, we have met the current federal health standards for ozone pollution and the Environmental Protection Agency recently approved our dust control plan. -Jane D. Hull
  • So I’m going to go on and work on preserving the ozone layer, encouraging everyone to recycle. -Dean Stockwell

As a country, we have confronted and controlled the most common sources of ozone precursors, and our options are few and far between to handle what remains, which is mostly naturally occurring ozone and ozone transported from other countries such as Mexico. -Jim Inhofe

  • From a scientific perspective there is some indication that a nuclear war could deplete the earth’s ozone layer or, less likely, could bring on a new Ice Age – but there is no suggestion that either the created order or mankind would be destroyed in the process. -Herman Kahn
  • It is personal – deep in my bones and my flesh – the knowledge that we squandered our chance to avoid the climate emergency; to act when it would have been so much easier, as we did to stop acid rain, to save the ozone layer. -Elizabeth May
  • Sometimes the media gives us the impression that we are terminal patients, because of problems of global warmth or the ozone layer. And the people, they don’t understand that they can could change this situation for the better if they could act locally in a city. -Jaime Lerner
  • We’re looking at Earth science, observing our planet. Also space science, looking at the ozone in the atmosphere around our Earth. Also looking at life science. And on a human level, using ourselves as test subjects. -Laurel Clark

What’s happening to our world? Imagine the year 2000 and our ozone layer has vanished… Our planet has a fever and she is burning up – what will you do? -Charlene, Princess of Monaco

-Wil S. Hylton
  • You don’t know how to fix the holes in our ozone layer. You don’t know how to bring salmon back up a dead stream. You don’t know how to bring back an animal now extinct. And you can’t bring back forests that once grew where there is now desert. If you don’t know how to fix it, please stop breaking it! -Severn Cullis-Suzuki

We conclude that both challenged aspects of EPA’s regulations implementing the 2008 ozone standards exceed the agency’s authority under the Clean Air Act… Because we find that the EPA’s challenged implementation rules exceed the agency’s authority under the Clean Air Act, we vacate the pertinent portions of EPA’s regulations. -Sri Srinivasan

  • The way I see it is that love can put an end to this bureaucracy people go through in their relationships. But it can’t blind you to the fact that maybe there are bombs, there are problems and the ozone layer is depleting. -Adrienne Shelly
  • The ‘Wall Street Journal’ is quite irate that I rank them with industry front groups and cranks denying climate change. But they have a record whenever industrial pollutants are involved. Look at the ‘Journal”s commentary on acid rain, on the ozone layer, and on climate change. -Sheldon Whitehouse
  • I was part of Environment Canada’s work to stop acid rain, create national parks, clean up the Great Lakes, develop new environmental legislation and negotiate the treaty that saved the ozone layer. -Elizabeth May

In that prehistoric time, before the Internet, before information floated in the ozone, I was a soccer novice who had never heard of Socrates until somebody pointed him out – swarthy, shaggy, tall, slender, mysterious. -George Vecsey

  • Since I was growing up in New Zealand where there’s a hole in the ozone layer above us, we get so much sun damage to our skin, and the thing we can do to look after ourselves is use sunscreen during the day, but making sure your skin is well hydrated while you sleep. -Rose McIver
